Finding the perfect newborn photographer

There are so many important things to consider when hiring a newborn photographer to capture your most precious little people. The safety of your family should be of the utmost importance. So, what kind of things should you research in a photographer?

Questions to ask your photographer –

1 - How many years have you been in business? - You want to work with a photographer who is experienced, has worked with a lot of families, and is properly trained.

2 -What training have you had? Do they know first aid? Do they know how to check if your baby is too hot or cold? What do you do when my baby is crying in a pose?

3 - Do they speak with you prior to booking? It’s so important to understand how a photographer captures your newborn. Their process, their safety precautions, their personal standards, how they will soothe your newborn and what they expect of you to prepare for your session.

4 - Reviews - Check them and read through them. Reviews say a lot about how photographers capture your family.

5 - What’s their availability? - Some photographers only work weekdays. Most newborns need to be captured in the first 14 days of life. To ensure you have your newborn in on time, you need to have your due date booked well in advance, so spots are being held for you. Consider booking your session after 12 weeks of pregnancy to avoid disappointment. Find out how much time they a lot for your session and how many newborn sessions they schedule a day. There is nothing worse than being rushed to any appointment. Especially when it comes to your newborn. This very well may be your first appointment after your baby is born. You should feel relaxed and as ready as you can be.

6 - Costs - This is an important one. Not only for your own budget needs but also to understand how photographers charge for their time and services. Experienced photographers will charge more. That’s because they have taken their courses, they have the experience, and they charge for that time. If a photographer’s cost is low, it could mean they are just starting out and want to gain experience. That’s fine, we’ve all been there however, make sure they are trained and have an assistant.

7 - What does the cost include? Do images come with the cost? Do you have access to all props? How many setups will be provided? Do the sessions include siblings and family? If you want to purchase additional digital images, prints or artwork, how much are they?

8 - Compilations - You don’t want your newborn put into any uncomfortable positions or, placed in any prop they shouldn’t be in. So, ask your photographer how they do the froggy pose. This should ALWAYS be done with an extra set of hands.

9 - Where does the shoot take place? Is it in a studio or in your own home? Do you have a choice? And on that note, do they offer posed or lifestyle sessions? This could really matter when it comes to the location you’d like. Are there additional fees for in-home sessions?

10 - Book a photographer who has consistent work. They post frequently/update their website. Book someone who has captured work that you love but also will talk you through your photography wishes.
